Flower Garland

Daniel Seghers (1590-1661)
Flower Garland with the Holy Sacrament and an Angel's Head [About 1645-61]
Oil on canvas,
The Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Plants such as roses, thistles and blackthorn evoke Christ's suffering.

Corn and grapes refer to the bread and wine of the Mass.

The four Evangelists are represented by their symbols: an angel's head, a lion, an ox and an eagle.
