Corot was born in Paris and studied there with the classicizing painters Michallon and Bertin before leaving in 1825 for the first of three visits he made to Italy. (1825-28, 1834 and 1843)

He was part of the Barbizon school

Now more famous for his soft, evocative landscape paintings, he also painted classical and religious themes which went on exhibition
